So there is this thing where, at the close of some kind of transaction with a stranger, one or both parties seem obliged to overcompensate for their strangehood by offering one of a socially-mandated menu of benign platitudes expressing, for example, a vague desire for the other’s existence to continue unmolested until at least after they have parted company. The most common of these is some variation of “have a nice day”, but there are, of course, seasonally-appropriate replacements.
